Perth Underground Rail & Elizabeth Quay Station

Perth Underground Rail & Elizabeth Quay Station

Two city underground railway stations and 2.5km of rail line running directly through Perth CBD in dual bored tunnels were undertaken as part of the South West Metropolitan Railway (SWMR) project ‘Package F’ component as a design & construct joint venture between Leighton Contractors and Kumagai Gumi.

MPS Architects and Hassell were invited and worked together with an agreed team of consulting engineers. MPS Architects participated in a preselection process with other key members of the team. Station designs, costs were prepared and PTA assessed the team’s ability to work collaboratively with the PTA. After award project team members were co-located at a project office with PTA alliance staff to develop the station designs prepared during the assessment period and further establish construction methodologies put forward during the assessment process.

Perth Underground Station was constructed with underground platforms within a station box below the commercial city block bounded by the Murray Street Mall, William Street and Wellington Street.

Elizabeth Quay Station was constructed as a cut and cover station below the Mounts Bay Road/The Esplanade/William Street intersection.
