Curtin University - Building 303-308 Elevated Pedestrian Link

Curtin University - Building 303-308 Refurbishments & Additions

Buildings 303, 304 and 305 were to become vacant at the completion of Curtin’s new chemistry building. The vacancy created an opportunity to refurbish the 1960’s buildings, and consolidate the biology precinct.

A brief was developed in consultation with user groups and Curtin Properties. Schematic master plans were developed, from which feasibility studies were carried out and timing and costs of various proposals assessed. A more specific brief was then developed and carried forward.

The redundant chemistry labs and workstations were replaced with flexible teaching spaces, the services upgraded, and the structure reinforced. The buildings also required a lift and ramps for universal access. The learning spaces were to be flexible and able to incorporate the latest pedagogies of Curtin University utilising a centrally accessible AV network with a perimeter of data points, electronic lecterns and data projectors as well as the traditional white boards.

Service co-ordination involved consultants working closely with facilities management to ensure existing services and the greater campus networks were respected. The elevated walkways were light structures laid over, and spanning between, existing reinforced concrete walkway canopies, using the existing structures to support the new covered walkways.
